Taxing Time

BIG THANK YOU to all our volunteer accountants who made sure that all those complicated but very important tax forms were completed on time for our clients. There was a lot of very hard work involved and we really appreciate the efforts made to get everything done on time. We have successfully filed 95 tax returns and helped more than 200 low income families with their tax issues. If you are interested in joining the program next January and February, please contact Krissy Yang at volunteer@vircs.bc.ca . Phew! That's it all done for another year.

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program – Volunteer Update

Thank you so much to those who contributed to the income tax program last year. It was a great success. And a lot of you have already expressed their interest in this program this year -your support is appreciated! This year’s tax season is fast approaching and training will begin this weekend for those registered in the CVITP training session. With the help of Revenue Canada, each year VIRCS provides free income tax filing for low-income newcomers.

The Revenue Canada training will be happening for the month of February, with the first clinics starting in March. Please note that, while Revenue Canada generously provides both the software and training for all volunteers, volunteers must already have a working knowledge of the Canadian Tax system and some relevant income tax experience.

This year our income tax clinics will be taking place during the evening on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm to accommodate volunteers and clients work schedules. Volunteers who complete 30 hours of service will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Volunteer Income Tax Program is over - thank you team!

Thank you so much to our great team of volunteer income tax preparers! Together, the team filed 110 returns in 9 weeks, and helped many more make sense of Canada's intricate tax system through information and general support. Especially for those filing for the first time, your efforts have given them a new understanding of Canadian taxes that will benefit them for years to come.

Income Tax Help is now available

This year, we have a fabulous team of volunteers for our Community Income Tax Volunteer Program.

This program helps people with low income file their taxes each year, many for the first time! The service saw its first clients on March 1st, and will run until April 30th.

All taxes are prepared by Revenue Canada-trained volunteers, and are done for free. To qualify, clients must make less than $25,000 individually, or $35,000 for their household. Sorry, no service is available for business owners.

If you qualify, and would like our help, you can book an appointment with Anna at the front desk. Anna can be reached at reception@vircs.bc.ca, or 250-361-9433 x200.

Income Tax Program 2010

Training has begun

It is time again for our Volunteer Income Tax Program! Each year, experienced tax volunteers help clients with low or no incomes file their Income Taxes for free, many for the first time in Canada!

Thanks to the support of Revenue Canada, training and software for the program is provided for free to volunteers. We now have dates for training times from Revenue Canada, and will be ready to see clients starting March 1st.

To become an Income Tax Volunteer, volunteers must already have knowledge of the income tax system in Canada. The training will provide information on changes for the current year, and guide volunteers in using the Revenue Canada software.

The Year Ahead - Volunteer Income Tax Program

Thank you so much to those of you who have already offered to help out with this year's Volunteer Income Tax Program! With the help of Revenue Canada, each year VIRCS provides free income tax filing for low-income newcomers.

We will be starting official recruitment and orientations in January. Revenue Canada training in February, and open the first clinics in March. Please note that, while Revenue Canada generously provides both the software and training for all volunteers, volunteers must already have a working knowledge of the Canadian Tax system. This training is a great update on changes in the last few years and the use of the free software. We are not able to provide basic training on income tax in Canada.

To accommodate the schedules of professionals who would like to volunteer, this year again we will be offering our tax clinic in the evenings as well as some afternoons. Volunteers who complete 30 hours of service will be awarded a certificate of completion.
