VIRCS Volunteer Bulletin July '09

Good morning great VIRCS Volunteers!

Thank you so much for volunteering with us; We've had an exciting summer, and it's not over yet!

In this bulletin I'd like to tell you about:

  1. I-Plan-It Program Info Sessions
  2. Youth Strides Summer Camp
  3. VIRCS' Annual General Meeting - July 23rd
  4. Summer Intercultural Gathering
  5. The Next Volunteer Bulletin

I-Plan-It Program For Young Adults - Volunteer Info Sessions
For all of you who would like to Volunteer for our new I-Plan-It Program as Life-skills Workshop facilitators, Activity Night Leaders, or ESL Classroom Helpers, we are having an Info Session next Thursday, July 16th, from 5pm to 6:30pm at VIRCS. This is a great chance to meet the new staff, ask questions, and sign up to volunteer. We will be having a separate Info Session for the Conversation Clubs on Monday, July 27th, from 6pm to 8pm at VIRCS. These activities will start in August, and run on a four-month term.

Strides Summer Camp
While many Enable Program activities are inactive for the summer break, Negin and the Youth Leaders are busy preparing for Strides, our free summer camp for youth, from July 18th to 25th. Strides is the highlight of the year for many kids new to Victoria, and this year will be no exception thanks to the hard work of Negin and her team of youth leaders!

VIRCS Annual General Meeting - July 23rd
After Strides, another exciting event is just around the corner. Our Annual General Meeting will be on July 23rd from 7pm to 9pm at the Central Baptist Church, on 833 Pandora Avenue. Come and meet our new Board of Directors, meet our staff, and enjoy some great food!

Summer Intercultural Gathering - August 13th from 4-7pm
The HR Solutions Project's last event will be a huge celebration on August 13, from 4-7pm, at our Working Together celebration. This fun event is aimed at showing employers and employees how to create a positive, multicultural work environment, and will feature an interactive performance by Puente Theatre, free Henna tattoos, and Cross-Cultural Communication mini-workshops. Of course, it will also include our famous Multicultural Food! The event will be held at Victoria's Edelweiss Club, at 108 Niagara Street in James Bay.

If you are interested in helping out at this event, please contact me for more information.

The Next Volunteer Bulletin
This will be the last Volunteer Bulletin in email format! Thanks to a great volunteer, I have learned to design a web-based Volunteer Bulleting which will allow you to more quickly find the information you want, and will be accessible from anywhere! Thank you Shalina for having the patience and determination to train me ;-)

Lastly, I'd like to acknowledge the success of our Media Team! These hard-working volunteers have used their professional skills to create great promotional strategies and materials for many of VIRCS' programs, and have been instrumental in helping us reach those in need of our help. Thank you C.J., Carola, Estuardo, Fernando (both!), Edward, and Vessela!

Again, thank you all for volunteering with VIRCS, and have a great summer!

Best wishes,
Chris Geater
