VIRCS Volunteer Bulletin August '09

Hello awesome VIRCS volunteers!

Welcome to the very first On-Line Volunteer Bulletin. This is a website I have developed with the help of one of our volunteers, Shalina. Thanks Shalina for making this site possible!

In this Volunteer Bulletin, you can learn about:

How to navigate the Volunteer Bulletin website

Welcome to our new site!

Bulletins and updates are displayed here.
(in the Orange Square on the left side)

VIRCS information and a link to our next event are on the right.
(at the top)

Search Functions are on the bottom right
(in the yellow square) =====>

Search by topic (such as events) or Search by month (such as May)

At the very bottom right is information about the VIRCS Volunteer Program.

Each Volunteer Bulletin is posted as a full bulletin, including all new information, and by topic. To find out about a program or type of activity, Search by topic. To find out what's happened at a specific time, search by month.

This site is not listed in search engines, and is only intended to provide information for current volunteers. All posts are written by the Volunteer Coordinator, and reflect the Volunteer Coordinator's best information at the time of posting. If you would like any more information, please contact me.

Also, let us know what you think! This is a new site, and we may have made some mistakes. If you catch one, or have ideas on how to improve it, please contact me at volunteer@vircs.bc.ca.

Helping with our Summer Intercultural Gathering on August 13th

We are looking for volunteers to help with this fun event! We need volunteers to help with registration, greeting and guiding clients, helping with food and refreshments, and setting up the stage.

We are also looking for two volunteers to share a story or anecdote about the challenges of being in a multicultural workplace. These volunteers will get to help direct the actors and writers of Puente Theatre as they act out the story. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a Theatre Company!

Whether as a volunteer or participant, we'd love to see you at the event. Here is the invitation:

What's happening with the I-Plan-It program for young adults

We have completed the recent info sessions, and are starting the I-Plan-It activities this week! The first few weeks of activities will concentrate on participant assessment (seeing what people
need), and volunteer training. There are four volunteer roles in I-Plan-It:
  • Conversation Club Buddy
  • ESL Class Assistant
  • LifeSkills workshop Assistant
  • Activity Night Leader
To learn more about these, please contact me.

Volunteer Opportunities with our Enable youth program

Strides Summer Camp was a huge success!

24 newcomer youth spent an amazing week swimming, exploring the woods, and learning how to work together at Camp Barnard in Sooke last week. Thank you Youth Leaders for making this great event possible!

September is coming soon, and that means it's almost time to start our Youth Volunteer activities again. This year we have four weekly volunteer opportunities working with youth and children:

  • Youth Activity Night Leader
  • Homework Club Tutor
  • Sparks Activity Helper
  • One-on-One Tutor
To learn more about these rewarding volunteer positions, please contact me.

Translators needed!

We have three un-filled Translator opportunities.

We are currently looking for translators to help us translate a short powerpoint presentation into Mandarin or Spanish. This presentation will be used to give free workshops at VIRCS, and will be a great help to many people who struggle with written English!

We also need a Sudanese-speaker to help a mother access services in Victoria. The translator would meet the mother and her Settlement Worker at VIRCS to find help for her and her child, and to interpret government forms in English or French.

If you would like to know more about these, or know someone who could help, please contact me.

ESL class Volunteers - We need your help!

There have been many changes in our ESL classes over the summer, and we want to know what you think! If you have volunteered in our ESL class, we would like to know what were the joys, challenges, and missed opportunities you found while volunteering.

To make this easier for you, I have created a short questionnaire. To get a printable copy, or to let me know what you think, please contact me.

That's it for this month's Volunteer Bulletin! Let me know what you think of the new format, and Thank you for volunteering!

Sincerely,

Chris Geater
(Volunteer Coordinator)
